Chicago Cubs Cookbook to benefit the Dempster Family Foundation
Ok, Cubs fans, what should you try first, Ryan Theriot’s favorite jambalaya or Lou Piniella’s chicken salad? Maybe you have a sweet tooth and want to make the Ricketts’ own family sugar cookies? How about some Hall of Fame chicken tacos from Ryne Sandberg or ginger pork, courtesy of Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome? They’re all here in this one of a kind cookbook, with dozens of other recipes from current and former Cubs players, coaches, and broadcasters. Not only are there a variety of tempting, mouth watering items but there’s also some history of food at Wrigley Field. Did you know vendors wore different colored caps to identify what they’re selling?
Plus, we have recipes from some of Chicago’s leading restaurants, all lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned photographs of Cubs players, who’ve changed from helmets and gloves to chef’s caps and oven mitts. You’ll not only discover some of the players’ favorite dishes but also get a little insight into the Cubs. Want to make pitcher Tom Gorzelanny happy? Make him anything with Oreos. There are plenty of tidbits to go with the treats.
The most unique feature of this cookbook is the reason for its existence, which is to raise money for the Ryan and Jenny Dempster Foundation. In June, 2009 the Dempsters announced that their infant daughter Riley was born with DiGeorge Syndrome, a genetic deficiency that affects swallowing, breathing, and speech. The foundation provides support to charities and organizations that help children with this and other illnesses through monetary grants, programs and increased community awareness. It empowers organizations to help children with rare illnesses overcome difficult situations through providing funding to continue research for early detection of this disorder in children, especially supporting programs about DiGeorge Syndrome that provide education, physical therapy and activity to promote long term well being.
The Cubs players came up with the idea of sharing their favorite recipes to help one of the team’s favorite players, Ryan Dempster. It’s a winning combination. Oh, and Riley, now a toddler, although her favorite food is Cheez-Its, loves to eat whatever the family is eating, so she’ll undoubtedly be sampling these recipes right along with you!
The book will be sold at Wrigley Field for $16.95, at Jewel stores across Chicago and online.
